Though I only met John Wimber in person once -- and then only for a few minutes, I liked him very much. This was long before he became sick and long before The ElijahList existed.
Later, in the mid-1990's, I got to talk to John on the phone for quite a while. I "netted" a case or two of FREE Vineyard CDs after that call.
Now that was GREAT! And a gift case of Vineyard music from John Wimber! How cool was that?
We had possibly begun The ElijahList by this time but it was completely unknown to most people -- it was tiny at the time.
I was talking on the phone with John because I had used my "location" skills from my previous life's work, to locate two of John Wimber's long lost brothers whom he had never met -- all now with gray hair and all of the Wimber brothers now had failing health.
At least one -- if not both of the brothers -- got saved because he went looking for them. John was simply calling to thank me for the "find" and tell me the story of the reunion. That's how I got my free CDs.
But it was way back in 1984 when I found the power of God for the first time through the life of John Wimber. I'd never seen anything like this kind of power before. I knew I would never be the same! And I never have been.
John had a favorite expression about positions in the church...
He used to say, "An elder is a person who 'elds.'" In other words, he taught people not to seek the position but to simply DO what they were called to do. If it's being an elder.... well then -- "ELD!"
And praying for the sick, evangelizing, prophesying... they all come with the same instruction. Don't pass out business cards so much as -- just go out and DO it!
I wish the Church, rather than NIKE had come up with that slogan, "JUST DO IT!" John Wimber almost did -- by the things he taught!
Including this book by John called, THE WAY IN IS THE WAY ON are three books -- books by people who are JUST DOING IT. The chapters in John Wimber's book are:
Forward by Jack Hayford
Chapters:
1. What Does God Want from his Servants
2. The Way In is the Way On
